Who We Are

Founded in 2011, we envision a community where Burmese Americans are valued for who they are and their contribution, while being empowered to thrive alongside the people of Battle Creek to create a more equitable and inclusive community.

What We Do

The Burma Center empowers Burmese Americans and the Battle Creek community through advocacy, engagement, and education to support the whole person.

Our services include resource navigation, interpretation, translation, immigration paperwork assistance, and citizenship ESL classes. Our programming includes health & wellness, education, community engagement, and family empowerment. Our staff serve the community and advocate for Burmese Americans by working as school liaisons, participating in various committees and working groups, and serving on boards. We occasionally have volunteer opportunities to work with people in our programs.

Our office is located in a former high school building, which the Burma Center owns. We call it The Gathering Place, and it is the home not only of the Burma Center but also two preschools, an alternative high school, a veterans’ service group, parent/child playgroups, and other community service groups. We also rent event space to community members for weddings, quinceañeras, parties, and meetings. We love being able to provide a welcoming home to so many people, but our well-loved building also needs love. Many of our volunteer needs relate to the building. If you’ve got some extra elbow grease, we could use it!
