The Kalamazoo Drop-In Child Care is a free childcare program for income-eligible families. Volunteers assist in engaging children in play and educational activities; supervising children to provide a safe and nurturing environment; and interacting in a positive way with children, parents, volunteers and staff. Qualifications include an interest or experience working with children from 6 weeks to 5-years-old, consistent and dependable, and available to work a minimum of 2 hours a day or week. Benefits include gaining an understanding of early childhood development, learning responsible work habits and adult-child interactive skills. Volunteers learn how to work with others and respect differences. Hours: Mon-Fri [11am-3pm], minimum of 2-hr shifts. Minimum age: 18
To sign up for volunteering, you may call the KDCCC Volunteer Coordinator, Katie Chadwick, at 382-3640 for an interview. We have a short application form to fill out and we will also perform a background check. We provide a detailed orientation before you begin volunteering.
Our volunteers work alongside experienced child care professionals (KDCCC staff) and learn effective parenting skills and child development. They learn appropriate ways to interact with infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. They also experience the joy of caring for a fun and diverse group of children.
