YWCA Kalamazoo, in partnership with Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC).
Experience the joy of helping others reach their goals. As a Literacy Tutor, you will help YWCA clients build confidence, improve literacy, and develop practical skills, such as preparing for the GED, creating a resume, and interview skills, to pursue education and job opportunities.

Qualifications:
- Good reading and writing skills
- Be conscientious, flexible, patient, and positive
- Ability to respond to others in a warm, realistic, and nonjudgmental manner
- Have access to transportation
- Be willing to have a background check performed
- Openness to work with people of diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to complete YWCA and KLC application forms
Responsibilities:
- Meet once or twice weekly for 1 to 1 ½ hours. Prepare for each lesson.
- Keep a record of student progress, your preparation time, and teaching time.
- Inform the program coordinator of any problems or changes in tutoring status.
- Provide encouragement and support to the student.
- Set goals with your student and monitor the student’s changing needs and goals.
Training:
- Extensive training will be provided by KLC
- Volunteers will use the KLC “YWCA Satellite Site” 2-3 times a week for 3 hours each evening for training.
- Must be available for all class times: 6 pm to 9 pm.
- Classes could run as long as 6+ weeks.
Volunteers are required to complete both YWCA and KLC applications.
YWCA Background checks are required.
